Founders Porter
I love porters, I have said it before, and I’ll say it again. Love drinking them and have crafted a couple of homebrew recipes around the style. The Founder Porter is my latest stop on my Porter tour. Coming from a good lineage of Founders dark beers, KBS, Breakfast Stout, and Imperial stout, I’m expecting this to be another good brew.
Appearance:
Dark, Dark, Dark! Probably one of the darkest porters I’ve had. I usually expect a slight red hue around the edges, but this beer is black with a mocha colored head.
Founders Porter
Aroma:
This beer has a very decadent aroma, lush chocolaty caramel hits you up front, but there is some underlying coffee in there as well and a bit of roasted nuts.
Taste:
Like the aroma, this is a very lush beer. It has a velvety smoothness. Strong roasted malty character to this beer with a bit of chocolate. I was expecting a somewhat dryer beer, but this one finishes moderately sweet with a bitter coffee flavor. Has a good amount of hops which, seems to be driving the bitterness that is accompanying the coffee.
Glassware: Nonic/Pint
Calories: At 6.5% abv this beer would have 200-230 Calories (Calorie Chart)
Overall Impression:
I enjoyed this beer, it wasn’t overly hopped or had a burnt end, nice mouthfeel, good aroma and flavor. Like any beer you haven’t had, go try this.

I have yet to have anything by Founders as they aren’t available down here but I have someone sending me some of their Red’s Rye and Celebration IPA soon. I have found myself really getting into Porters lately so this looks quite good to me.

Sounds like a nice stout! Soon enough it will be my preferred beer style with the colder months approaching, so I’ll look for this one to try.

I need to try this one. These guys are so hit and miss for me that I’m reluctant to drink it. For instance, I don’t care for their Breakfast Stout or KBS (at least not to the degree that beer advocate and others do). Of course, I know I shouldn’t discount this one based on some others. I do have to say that this is a very dark looking beer. The line between Porters and Stouts is being more and more blurred. I guess it’s just as well since they are of the same lineage.

@Mike – at least you guys have Victory Brewing now, you should try their Storm King.
@Scott – me too, you’ll start seeing more big abv / dark beers from me (after I get through these New Glarus that came this week)
@Micheal – a very blurry line indeed. This one really blurs that line. If you leave out the BJCP guidelines and muddling of the porter/stout line , this is a quality beer that really tastes good.
