I’ve been holding beer tastings as many of you know a store in Montclair NJ, Amanti Vino. One of the things I like about Amanti Vino, they only carry craft beer and they have a nice beer of the month club. The folks at Amanti Vino gave me this bottle of Defiant Brewing Company’s Belgian Style Tripel to review for this months’ beer of the month club.

Style: Belgian Tripel

ABV: 9%

Bottle: 750 ml Corked & Caged

Price: $9.99 at Amanti Vino

Appearance:

Pours a very clear golden color, lots of bubbles gently flowing up trying to keep what little head there is afloat, with not much success. The head disappeared pretty quickly back into the glass leaving me with a thin collar of foam.

Aroma:

This beer has a bit of a muddled aroma, lots of grainy yeasty character with just a bit of finishing hops on the nose. I think the “muddled” nature of the aroma is from the undertone of earthiness and a hints of bubblegum that are usually not prevalent in this style.

Taste:

This beer has decent mouth feel, notes of lemon and honeydew along with the traditional yeasty sweet flavors you tend find with the style. It has a nice transition in flavors through the mouth, including a finish that verges on tart and gives you the impression of a dry finish even though it isn’t. There is also a fairly significant hop profile on the back end of this beer which lends to a earthy bitterness on the finish.

Glassware: Trappist or Tulip

Calories: at 9% and a fairly sweet beer, the Calorie Chart would suggest between 275 -290 per 12oz

Overall Impression:

I thought this was a decent Tripel. would like to see more from Defiant in bottles, they are pretty much a draft only brewery and I rarely seem to catch any of their beers on draft. One thing to note, as the beer warmed up the sweetness really becomes pronounced and was a bit more difficult for me to drink. I’ve found my palette tends to side with more bitter and sour, sometimes savory then it does with sweet.

Having known a few Celiacs, the one thing they ask me: “Are there any good beers out there for us?” There are a lot of people allergic to Wheat and Barley making beer unpleasant to a life threatening drink. Lately I have seen a few Gluten free beers come to market, most barely able to live up to the flavor profile of a generic macro adjunct lager. When I saw Green’s Gluten Free Triple Blonde Ale, I though this one may have some possibility, a 8.5% abv bottle refermented Triple Blonde Ale.

Here is how Green’s describes the beer:

Fairly light body for beer of this strength; spice and herb nose with flavors of candied fruit. Aromatic, long finish. OG: 1.072; IBU: 32; ABV: 8.5%

ABV: 8.5%

Bottle: 500ml cap top

Appearance:

Surprisingly, a very nice head on this beer. I suppose my standards are pretty low for this style of beer, but with a good head and a very clear golden color made for a very appealing looking beer. Also it had a good deal of carbonation as you might expect from a refermented beer.

Aroma:

Green’s Gluten Free Tripel Blond has a light yeasty aroma and a bit of lettuce to the nose. Otherwise not much happening here.

Taste:

The Kicker… Very carbonated with a light mouthfeel, it has a bit of a zing with a hint of citrus tartness and apple. Finishes off with a bit bitterness and some strawberry like residual tartness.

Calories: 145 per 8 oz

Glassware: Tulip

Overall Impression:

Actually not a bad beer, which shouldn’t come as a surprise since it is brewed by De Proefbrouwerij. Had some tartness to the beer which I enjoyed. If this style of beer was all I could drink, this would be a good option. The also have several other Gluten Free Beers, an Amber, Dubbel, along with other harder to find styles.

After a quick 50 mile trip up to the Captain Lawrence Brewery in Pleasantville NY, with a the threat of an apocalyptic snow storm looming; I was able to snag a couple of the last remaining Golden Delicious 750ml Bottles. Now, to have my first taste of the Captain Lawrence Golden Delicious. This beer is labeled an American Style Tripel that has been dry-hopped with Amarillo hops and aged in Apple Brandy Barrels.

But first, here is how Captain Lawrence Describes the beer:

There’s nothing quite likes Mom’s apple pie…But I am willing to bet this beer is pretty darn close. An American Tripel, dry-hoped with Amarillo hops and aged in Apple Brandy barrels from one of this country’s oldest distilleries. The tropical aroma of the hops and the delicate apple aroma from the barrels are a perfect match. Straight from the Captain’s cellar to yours, we hope you enjoy.

ABV: Not list on bottle or website, but a response from Captain Lawrence’s twitter feed: “@SimplyBeer well it starts at 10% before it goes into the barrel, so a little above that”

Bottle: 750ml

Appearance:

Beer pour a very hazy orange straw color, unfortunately I had to give the beer a fairly hard pour to get any kind of head on the beer. Not sure if my bottle was just under carbonated or is a result of High abv and/or the aging process. Surprisingly, the little collar of foam did leave a relatively substantial amount of lacing.

Aroma:

While not a powerful aroma as you might expect from dry-hopping with Amarillo hops, the aroma was very appealing and complex . Tart apples on oak hits you right away as the dominate aroma, followed by mango infused alcohol and hints of apricot.

Taste:

A very intriguing beer. It initial tastes like a tripel, sweet and bit boozy, until you are hit with the Apple, Brandy and some bitterness towards the end. The apple brandy really rounds out this beer nicely. It takes that sweetness most tripel have all the way through and cuts it off nicely, leaving your mouth refreshed and ready for another sip. With the big tart apple on the nose, I really didn’t get much tartness in the beer, which is probably a good thing thing. I’m not sure how well the sweetness from the base Tripel would work with a tart/sour apple flavor.

Calories: Unknown, no abv list, we can’t estimate the calories, But at 10-11% abv guesstimate, we could estimate about 315- 340 cal per 12oz (Calorie Chart)

Glassware: Goblet or wide mouth wine glass

Overall Impression:

Very pleased with this beer, well worth the trip up to the brewery. Which by the way, has some great beer on tap that they really should be bottling, in my humble opinion. The espresso stout was awesome. I digress, Back to the Golden Delicious; a unique take on a Tripel well worth seeking out. I’m excited to cellar a bottle for a year and try it again.

The thing about Belgian Style Ales is they are not Belgian Ales. There are only a handful of Belgian Ales. So, every time I open a Belgian Style Ale I wonder is if really going to be like a Belgian Ale or an Interpretation of one.

The Triple Reserve Belgian Style Ale by Allagash Brewing in Portland Maine is on the menu tonight, I really hope live up to the style. With an ABV of 9.0% it barely is in the range of the style, but why not push the limits, rights?

Allagash Tripel Reserve

Pour:

Pour carefully, the head can explode if not poured carefully.

Appearance:

A cloudy golden straw color, nicely carbonated with bubbles tumbling throughout the glass. Good frothy head, long lasting with amazing lacing.

Aroma:

Nice mild apple spice, fruity aroma with a slightly herbal fragrance. A nice sweet aroma with a barely noticeable hop presence nicely rounds out this beer.

Taste:

Ummmm… nice lemony peppery creamy start followed by a bready citrus flavor.

Drinkablity:

High ABV, 9.0%, but almost unnoticeable until you have to write about it. This is a very good clingy beer. If you haven’t had one, buy one, it is a very good example of a Belgian Style Triple!

Tasting Method: 750ml bottle

My Rating: 94
