It getting close that time of year when the Doppelbocks will be flooding the shelves of our local liquor stores just in time for Lent. Traditionally Doppelbocks are strong German lagers, also commonly know as liquid bread. German monks would brew this beer to sustain them through the fast of Lent. The Paulaner Salvator is one of the oldest German Doppelbock, the monks first started brewing this beer over 360 years ago.

ABV: 7.9%

Appearance:

This beer is a dark amber color, fairly clear with hings of brilliant orange when held to the light. Even though the head collapsed pretty quickly on this beer it did have a bit of carbonation to it with co2 bubbles continued to trickle to the top.

Aroma:

A very malty aroma awaits you with this beer. Hints of caramel, alcohol and plum accompany the sweet maltiness.

Taste:

A bit thin for a Doppelbock, but still had a decent mouthfeel. The overwhelming flavor was malt caramel sweetness. As with almost all beers, once you get past the initial flavor(s) and start looking deep into the beer other characteristics will emerge. With the Salvator, there was a pretty significant alcohol presence along with figs & cherries.

Calories: Doppelbocks have a lot of residual sugar, so error on the high side, at 7.9% abv this beer would have 250-265 cal per 12oz

Glassware: Pilsner or stemmed glass

Overall Impression:

This is one of the oldest commercial Doppelbocks we get in the US, so I would consider it the style. As with most styles, they can range in colors, flavors, and aromas. This was an easy drinking Doppelbock, not as heavy as some or what this beer used to be. Also a good winter warmer type beer. If you like this beer I would suggest trying some other Doppelbocks.

Beer Brawl™ 26 – Oktoberfest Part 1 – Blind Tasting

Our first ever blind Beer Brawl. We decided to test as many Oktoberfest beers as we could easily get our hands on without going over board. We ended up with 12 that we wanted to try and decided it would be fun to see what Fest beer we truly liked the best without any influence from the brand name. Since there were 12 beers we decide to split it up into two batches. We knew what was in each 6 block trial, but we didn’t know the order they would be served and the results we quite stunning!

With me on this podcast was Kevin Malavarca from the Liquor Outlet in Boonton NJ and Jay Phillips from Samuel Adams. The only prerequisite I have for the Beer Brawl™ is a love of beer. You don’t need to know anything about the beers we are drinking only a willingness to try them and voice an opinion.

Beer Brawl 15 Hefe-Weizen

This weeks’ Beer Brawl is an attempt to bring back summer to New Jersey. It has been raining for more days in a row then I can count. So, we’re focusing on a traditional German Beer and also a great summer session beer, Hefe-Weizen for our 15th Beer Brawl. The “Hefe” is German for yeast and “Weizen” is for wheat, meaning the yeast is still in the wheat beer giving this style of beer its characteristic hazy appearance. The yeast used in this style will typically give the beer unique banana and clove characteristics, often dry and sometime spicy or tart. They are also low alcohol (session) beers, typically ranging from 4%-5.5% abv.

By far our most entertaining podcast! The swilling started of pretty normally for a beer brawl. We quickly went through the 5 German beers in about 40 minutes. They were all pretty much what we expected. The best of the Germans was the Weihenstephaner Hefe Weissbier (say that 5 times fast!). It was a well crafted, exceptionally balanced beer. At least that was my opinion, Mark had his opinions about the beer and oh boy, when it came to the Hitachino you got to listen to his tirade! It didn’t get much better with Mark and I with the UFO, but thankfully the Flying Dog In-Heat wheat saved the day and Mark’s blood pressure.
