As some of you may have noticed I took a couple weeks off, but that didn’t stop me from indulging in a few beers.  The most memorable was an exploding bottle of Hitachino Nest XH.  I pulled this out of my cellar when I decided to have a personal tasting of some barrel aged beers.  Normally a bottle of exploding beer would really piss me off, in this case it really pissed me off, why?  Because it was so damn good.

I wasn’t actually going to write anything on this beer cause I’m swamped with work, but this beer has provoked me to do a quick write up.  What got me to try this beer was the warning label on the side of the bottle.  Every year for at least the last couple, Weyerbacher has been putting out a Riserva beer.  I’d never had it and frankly I never was impressed with the label so I just kinda glazed by it in the past.  I know wrong reason to skip over a beer, but I’m a visual person, it is what it is.

I’m here in San Francisco (at least when I wrote this) staying in Noe Valley.  With a quick walk down to my local craft beer store, Plumpjacks on 24th street, I quickly honed in on the several Cascade beers on the shelf.  Since I’d had the other two, I easily decided on the Apricot.  I’d never had a apricot beer, let alone a sour apricot and frankly I don’t know if I would even drink a regular apricot beer…

I’ve been looking forward to this beer since I saw a press release on BeerNews.org.  Lucky for me I got two bottles of it.  One I’m drinking tonight and the other I’ll be sharing with my fellow beer geeks at #BrewYork on Friday.  The Jolly Pumpkin Biere de Goord is a cooperative beer between Jolly Pumpkin, Pints for Prostates, and Rare Beer Club. The beer that was created sounds absolutely intriguing, a saison brewed with kale, pumpkin seeds, pumpkin and green tea, was made by Jolly Pumpkin to help raise awareness about prostate cancer and generate funds for the Pints for Prostates campaign.

My wife and I are on a quest to find her 10 beers over the next 3 months that she can enjoy! We have found very few beers that she has enjoyed. After a couple days off from this challenge I thought I would go with a brewer that doesn’t let me down, Mikkeller. the other night I had the single yeast Brettanomyces beer and it was awesome, full of funk and flavor.  So, I thought I would give Dani a taste of some funky Wild Ale… (more…)

My buddy Scott comes through for me again.  This time with New Belgium’s Eric’s Ale from their Lips of Faith series. I’m a huge fan of sour beers, what had my interest in this beer is their La Folie.  La Folie, for those of you who haven’t had it, it is an exceptional sour ale and this beer is brewed with peach juice.  How many beers have you had made with peach juice?  Probably not many, me neither.
