The Simply Beer Tastings are hugely popular. Last months tasting sold out in 4 days with over a dozen people on a waiting list. Our small intimate tastings have proven to be extremely fun, entertaining, and even educational. We limit the number of guests in order to keep them fun and personal, but also allows us to bring in a couple of surprises to share with you.

This is a beer I’ve been looking for a long time and when I was offered it during a beer trade, I jumped on it. Each Year Flying Dog puts out a new beer in their Wild Dog Series, several years ago they barrel aged some of their Horn Dog English style Barleywine in Oak Whiskey Barrels. You may be asking why am I reviewing this beer instead of saving/cellaring it further. I asked Matt Brophey, Head Brewer of Flying Dog, should I drink it now or cellar, he eluded to drinking it now since it was already several years old. He also said it had a lot of vanilla when it was originally packaged, so that is something I’ll be looking for.

This has been a long awaited beer for me. Flying Dog is one of my favorite breweries, yet NJ always seems to be at the bottom of the list. I get it, I understand why, New Jersey is not considered a craft beer state. I’m working on it, converting people one beer at a time. The Dog Schwarz Smoked Double Lager is a limited release in Flying Dog’s Wild Dog series. After much fanfare with the 2008 release they created another limited run in 2009, which I will be uncorking in just a few minutes. The Dog Schwarz is a combination of a schwarzbier (a German black lager) and a rauchbier (a German smoked beer); lets see how these to styles married up to one another.

Our first ever blind Beer Brawl. We decided to test as many Oktoberfest beers as we could easily get our hands on without going over board. We ended up with 12 that we wanted to try and decided it would be fun to see what Fest beer we truly liked the best without any influence from the brand name. Since there were 12 beers we decide to split it up into two batches. We knew what was in each 6 block trial, but we didn’t know the order they would be served and the results we quite stunning!

My first taste of the Flying Dog Double Dog was in Beer Brawl 4. Since then I’ve been looking for a reason to have it again. Well, no reason is as good as any reason.
